The National Basketball Association is composed of thirty teams in North America (twenty nine in the United States and one in Canada). The league was founded in New York City on June 6, 1946 as the Basketball Association of America. The newer name was adopted in 1949 after it merged with its rival, the then National Basketball League. In 1996, the National Basketball Association created a women's league called the Women's National Basketball Association.
