Some historians trace the history of golf to a Roman game called paganica which consisted of participants using a bent stick to hit a stuffed level ball. According to one theory, paganica spread throughout Europe  as the Romans conquered more and more of the continent, eventually evolving into the modern game of golf. Another theory says that golf dervies from the Chinese game of chuiwan. The major championships in the world for men are the The Masters, the U.S. Open, The Open Championship and the PGA Championships. Women's golf, however, does not have a globally agreed set of majors.
