These cufflinks take their inspiration from a tool known as a spirit level or bubble level, which is designed to indicate whether or not a surface is level or plumb. Different kinds of spirit levels are used by various professions from carpentry to bricklaying and even very serious videographers. The spirit level is filled with a yellow colored ethanol (alcohol), leaving a buble in the tube. Ethanol is used because it has a low viscosity. The bubble travels the tube very quickly and will settle quite accurately. The psirit level was invented all the way in 1620/1 by one Melchisedech Thevenot, who was an amateur scientist.
